Community income maximisation and welfare support for Lewisham residents

Arami Nkaa
This service is for Lewisham residents who are going through a tough time and are receiving emergency support from the food bank. We can help Lewisham residents by going through their income and benefits entitlement and if necessary we help make applications and benefit reviews in order to increase their income and improve their general wellbeing.

Case study: Mr R.T

Mr R.T has been living and working in London for 2 years. He was renting a bedroom and saving money to bring his family to live with him. His wife and 2 children (3 and 8 year olds) arrived in February 2020. A work colleague rented him a 2 bedroom flat but in August last year Mr R.T lost his job and his accommodation as result of the pandemic. As they had no other family in the UK, they went to stay with a friend sharing a 4 bedroom flat with 2 other families. Although they were sharing a flat they were still tight on money so we helped Mr R.T apply for Universal Credit.

Mr R.T was referred to Lewisham Council for Housing Advice and Help to Rent scheme for help with rent and deposit for a private accommodation,  he is now searching for accommodation with the help of a volunteer interpreter from LADPP. The family was referred to Brighter Beginnings for help with basic items, clothes, etc, the Youth and Family project helping them to find a new school for the children. Mr R.T was also referred to LADPP's Employment program where he will learn how to create a CV, learn interview skills and improve his chances of finding better jobs. Mr R.T and his wife are currently taking online English lessons on LADPP's Zoom Classes. We also referred them to the LADPP EU Settlement Project, which is another service we provide, in order to help them with their status in this country and further stabilize them.
